Yes, there have been riots for some weak reasons, I concede this. But on the whole I still have never understood why so many people believe the whole earth would riot if it were somehow proven that intelligent life forms exist on another planet.

If they were literally in the midst of invading, yes, I get it. But the assumption always seems to be that the mere knowledge of alien existence would turn civilization into rubble.
